Chapter Thirty-Three

“You smell nice,” Ayden said as he helped me into the car.

“Yeah,” Lucian said from the sardine-can-sized backseat. “Since when do you wear perfume?”

“Shut up.” I blushed at Ayden’s wry grin.

I didn’t kid myself. Ayden charmed so he could stay close, but I couldn’t deny his alluring charisma and whole cool package Luna and Lucian devoured like candy. And I was wearing perfume. Crap.

Screeching tires pulled in behind us. A hybrid rocked to an angry halt and, like some magic trick, Blake unfolded his massive bulk from the compact car. He had a crisp button-down shirt over a fresh T-shirt, jeans that actually looked ironed, and his curls were gelled into some semblance of order.

He struck a dramatic pose, hands on hips. “Et tu, Judas?”

Unfazed by the theatrics, Ayden said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Blake pointed an accusing finger. “I know you melted the wires in my engine. Think you’re so smart. But you’re not the only one with mechanical ability.”

“You called Logan, didn’t you.”

“Of course I called Logan. He’s my mechanical ability. But that’s not the point. The point is I got it fixed and I’m here in time to pick her up. So despite your backstabbing sabotage, I’m ready to take her to school. Aurora, please get out of the,” he eyed Ayden’s car, “super exotic sports car and into my…practical hybrid.” His face fell into misery. “Come on, dude, how am I supposed to compete with,” he stabbed a hand at Ayden’s car, “that!?”

Ayden shrugged. “You can’t.” He moved to shut my door but Blake gripped the top.

“Un-uh.”

Ayden and Blake stared each other down.

“Oh. My. God,” Luna blurted from Ayden’s back seat. “It’s a love triangle.”

We all looked at her like she’d sprouted an alien from her head. “It’s just like in my book. Two guys after one girl and—”

I groaned. “That’s ridiculous. Luna, this is not a love triangle.”

“Says the girl in the middle of a love triangle.” Luna ignored my protests and prattled on. “Not one Hex Boy but two. I’ve got to call Danica. Ooooo,” she squealed and clapped her hands, “we could have teams. Team Ayden and Team Blake. With T-shirts and buttons and—”

“I could make a website,” Lucian offered.

“No!” My voice pitched with panic. “No teams. No shirts. No—”

“I’ll get you some headshots,” Blake said, turning his profile toward Luna and Lucian. “I’ve been told the left is my best side. What do you think?”

“Aurora’s right,” Ayden said. “This is nuts. Blake you can follow us—”

“Dude, you know no one would pick Team Ayden. You’re just jealous.”

“That’s not true. My team would be way bigger than yours.”

“Dare to dream, little man, dare to dream.”

“Care to make a wager on that?”

“Absolutely.”

“Fine. How about—”

“You two shut up!” I shoved myself out of the car. “Blake, I’ll go with you, but,” I pointed a warning finger, “no funny stuff.”

He raised his palms in surrender. “Perfect gentleman. Promise.”

I eyed Ayden. “Like I haven’t heard that before, but let’s go.”

“Oh, yeah!” Blake fist-pumped the air, practiced some odd hip gyrations, and smirked at Ayden.
